Anti-addiction drug ibogaine on trial

Abstract

By the end of the month, the US National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) will decide whether to proceed with plans for a phase I clinical trial to test the safety of ibogaine, a controversial new drug, for treating drug addiction in humans. Anecdotal reports of use in humans and laboratory studies in animals suggest that ibogaine may interrupt addiction to both heroin and cocaine without symptoms of withdrawal.
